4 Tips to Help You Fit Into Your New Job

The job search process can be absolutely exhausting.  Preparing your resume for prospective employers takes a lot of careful work.  Finding job openings that you are qualified for requires patience and research. Finally, the interviewing process can be nerve-racking and stressful.

Once you find and accept a job you want, a large weight is lifted off your shoulders.

Once you have a new job, you have to go in and prove that you were the best choice and that you can make a meaningful impact to the company. You also want to immerse yourself into the culture and team you are working with as quickly as possible.

Here are some tips to help you fit seamlessly into your new job:

Ask questions

Everyone has heard the phrase, ‘there are no stupid questions’, and this definitely holds true when you are starting a new job.  The only way you are going to learn the way things work at a new job is by asking how they work.  The more quickly you understand what keeps an office working and functioning properly, the more quickly you will fit in.

Manage expectations

When you are starting a job, no matter what job it is, you are going to be learning.  Whether it is procedures for your new company, new systems or programs you haven’t used before you’re going to have to adapt.  Because of the new surroundings and work, you may not be able to produce your best results from day one.  Make sure you manage expectations and give yourself some time to adapt and adjust.

Say yes to lunch

As the new member of a team, lunch can be intimidating.  Do you sit at your desk and eat alone?  Do you eat in the break room?  Do you go out and grab lunch?

If anyone asks you to lunch during your first few days, say yes!

First of all, this is a great way to get to know the people you are working with.  Second, getting to know the people you work with is the ultimate way to fit in, and it is a great way to pick up workplace insights.

Be enthusiastic

“You’ll never achieve real success unless you like what you’re doing,” said Dale Carnegie, the author of How to Win Friends and Influence People.” You won’t fit in at your new job if it seems like you don’t want to be there.  Be enthusiastic about every opportunity you have to learn and the chance to forge a new path within your career.   Enthusiasm and a positive attitude can go a long way towards developing relationships with people.
