Most people find attending job interviews to be nerve-racking. They are one of those rare times where you know for certain that you are being judged.
Dressing to look your absolute best plays a big role in your overcoming those nerves and performing well. Doing so gives your confidence a boost. Plus, it significantly increases your chances of making a positive first impression.
Pay attention to the little things
It is important to pay attention to the little things when dressing for an interview. Make sure your shoes are clean, your shirt is tucked in, that you don’t have sweat pits and don’t forget your glasses. The lenses should be squeaky clean. Smeared lenses are a sure sign that your day to day grooming is not actually that good. The interviewer will believe that you have only made the effort for the interview and may worry that you will not keep up that standard.
Most people remember to do their hair, makeup and clean their fingernails, before an interview. But, those who do not normally have good grooming habits will usually forget to clean their glasses properly. So, this is the sort of thing that experienced interviewers look out for. If they think for one moment that you are only well-groomed because you are at an interview, they will not offer you the job.
Consider buying a brand-new outfit
If you have the cash to be able to do so, buy a completely new outfit to wear for interviews. Look at it as an investment.
Very few people land a job after just one interview. So, the chances are you will need to attend several before getting hired, which means you will get plenty of use out of your new outfit. Plus, provided you choose wisely, you will be able to wear it once you start work again.
If you cannot afford to buy a brand-new outfit, try charity shops. According to this study, around 6% of what charity shops sell has never been worn. So, you can pick up a real bargain by shopping this way.
At the very least, buy a new shirt or top. A crisp new shirt or blouse will lift the look of any suit.
Try your interview outfit on
Don’t make the mistake of not trying your outfit on until a few minutes before you are due to leave home. Try it on several days before. This gives you time to look in the mirror, spot any issues and fix them.
Plan to arrive early
Give yourself plenty of time to travel to the interview location. That way if you get stuck in traffic or your train is delayed you still won´t be late. It will also ensure that you do not arrive looking hot, flustered or unkempt. You should allow yourself at least 15 minutes to find the restroom and check your appearance in the mirror before the interview.
Following the above guidelines and choosing an outfit that is appropriate for the position you are applying for will help you to land the job you want. Take every interview seriously and dress appropriately to significantly increase your chances of finding employment.
