Becoming a successful entrepreneur does not just happen overnight. Anyone who is considering this career path needs to be prepared for plenty of ups and downs along the way, and a lot of hard work. It’s also important for any entrepreneur to have a lot of self-confidence and a deep belief in their ideas and the goals that they are attempting to attain.
Dr h. c. Harald Seiz talks about the importance of self-confidence and belief in his book, “Think BIG – How to Conquer the World with a Great Idea“. The globally renowned author and entrepreneur hightlights the fact that, “Having confidence in yourself and your abilities is crucial”.
Why self confidence matters so much
Dr. Seiz talks about an occasion at the age of 15 when he impersonated Elvis Presley at a local disco. As he says,
“I was determined to express my newly won self-confidence replacing the fear and doubt that had dictated my actions in the past with bravery and optimism.”
The result was ecstatic cheering from his friends which caused inspiration to flow within him. This inspiration spurred him on to go futher and push harder. The fact is that no entrepreneur can hope to succeed without having the self-confidence to put their ideas and aspirations into the spotlight.
Anyone is capable of having an idea that could protentially develop into a great opportunity. Many people are not self-confident or brave enough to voice their ideas, and put themselves forward to be critiqued by others. People who are capable of having a successful career as an entrepreneur have plenty of self-confidence and are willing to place themselves in the spotlight.
The importance of belief
In addition to self-confidence, it’s important for any entrepreneur to have belief in their ideas and their talent. This does not mean that the belief can never be shaken. As Dr. Seiz says in “Think BIG”,
“Doubts are okay as long as you don’t begin to despair. At the same time, criticism is also good and important, as long as it does not become destructive.”
What is important is that belief is still there. Doubts may surface and critcism may appear, but there always has to be an underlying belief that good can come from even negative situations and that it’s possible to move forward. This has always been the case for Dr. Seiz, even when he has been at the lowest points in his life.
If an entrepreneur does not have self-confidence, and a belief in their ideas and talents, no-one else is going to believe in them. It’s important for anyone who wants to have a successful entrepreneurial career to be able to vocalise their ideas and have the confidence to get people to believe in them. Without these traits, it’s difficult for an entrepreneur to succeed in developing their ideas into a product or service that has something to add to an already crowded market place.
