Healthy Frustration vs. Chronic Complaining

In this economy, there are many frustrated people looking for work or looking to progress in their careers. There’s nothing wrong with frustration as long as you learn to deal with it in a constructive manner. However, there is a difference between those who are merely frustrated and those who are just chronic career complainers. No one likes a complainer and no one wants to help a complainer. So, how do you know if you’ve crossed over from someone who is merely frustrated, to someone who is just a negative grump? Here are three signs:

  1. You spend more time griping about your career problems than you do trying to solve them

  2. You spend more time asking for a handout than you do trying to help others

  3. You spend more time talking about what you don’t have rather than leveraging the resources you do have

Why You Could Be Damaging Your Personal Brand

What makes this attitude damaging is if a person vents their frustrations on social networks. In fact, one survey from the Oregan Business Report indicated that 35% of employers indicated that they disregarded a candidate after screening them online because the candidate bad-mouthed their previous employer, co-workers or clients. You might think your conversations on social media are private but they aren’t. You might also think that whatever you complain about is legitimate but the bottom line is that if you portray yourself as a negative person, you are damaging your personal brand more than whomever you are bad-mouthing. Channel your frustration and use it as motivation. Attitude is a tremendous part of success and if you want success, make sure you have the right attitude for it. You’ll find that being positive will open more doors and more people will want to help you achieve your goals.
