6 Jobs That Will Pay You to Travel

hands-pointing-to-map

There’s a whole wide world out there, and unfortunately many of us don’t get to see a lot of it. This is partly do to other commitments – family and jobs – but it is largely due to financial considerations. It’s hard to travel when you need to earn a living and pay your bills. But what if you could work and travel at the same time? That would allow you to see the world, without plunging yourself into debt. For most of us, we can’t do our current jobs while we travel, but there are some jobs that will pay you to travel. If you’ve been thinking about a career change, and you want to travel more, consider the options below.

Travel Writer

One job that a lot of people think of when they hear “get paid to travel” is that of a travel writer. Travel writers go to places all over the world, then write about their experiences. They rate hotels, recommend things to do, and provide tips for visiting that location. It’s a great job if you can get it, but that means a lot of people are after it.

You’ll have to have some excellent writing skills in order to find someone willing to pay you for your opinions on locations, and even that might not be enough. Some people choose to start their own travel blog and monetize it, but keep in mind this can take a while to get off the ground, and you may not see any money from it for a while (if at all).

Government Jobs

While our government is located here in the United States, that doesn’t mean everyone who is a part of it lives here. There are plenty of jobs within the government that require you to travel around. For example, you could work as a translator, or in a foreign embassy. If you want to do your part to help out our country, get paid for it, and see a little bit of the world, look into getting a government job abroad.

Truck Driver

For those of you who want to stay within this country, but want to see more of it, consider becoming a truck driver. Truck drivers are required to move cargo all over the country, and get to see some places you might not otherwise visit. You likely won’t get much say in the places you travel to, and with tight schedules you won’t get much time to explore. Still, flatbed trucking companies are always hiring, so if you like driving and want to see more of the country, consider this route.

Flight Attendant

Another common job that people think of when they think of getting paid to travel is that of a flight attendant. Flight attendants fly free, and get to visit places all over the world. In this role you’ll be required to help out passengers, making sure they remain comfortable and safe throughout the flight. You’ll need good people skills, and the ability to travel long hours in the air. It’s not an easy job, but considering the perks that come with it, it’s a great option for people who want to travel more while still earning a living.

Yachtie

Back on the ground, a lesser-known job is that of a yachtie. Yachties sail yachts around the world, taking care of the passengers with whatever they need. The people who own the yachts are usually rich or famous, so you’ll be dealing with some elite clientele. These people can often be hard to work for, and you’ll need to know how to properly sail a yacht before you find a job. But if you don’t mind working for difficult people, it’s a great way to visit some exotic destinations in luxury.

Work on a Cruise Ship

Finally, if yachts aren’t your thing, or you don’t know how to sail, you could still get a job on a cruise ship. Cruises take place all over the world, and they need a wide variety of people to help these ships run. You could work in guest services, as an entertainer, as a deck hand, or with the food services, just to name a few. Cruise ship contracts vary in length, so you’ll get to decide how long you want to be away. For more information about working on a cruise ship, you can check out this link.

Get Paid to Travel

Seeing the world doesn’t have to be expensive. If you’re willing to change careers, and make some sacrifices, you can get paid to see the world. It’s just a matter of finding a job that is right for you, but also requires you to travel. Luckily there are plenty of options, and the above list will hopefully give you a good idea on where to start your search.
